I feel very lucky to have enjoyed traditional hare coursing, in the days when this ancient sport was not only legal but also drew large crowds. Though heavily modified and stylised by countless generations of men and dogs, there was something primordially exciting about the chase as it unfolded. The sport made it easy to imagine what the world might have been like for an ancient Briton or a Saxon nobleman; the crucial ingredients had not changed for thousands of years.
