SOUTH AFRICA may have been one of the last countries to resume elite rugby in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the country’s players have been busy ever since. First came Super Rugby Unlocked, then the Currie Cup, and now four franchises are preparing to join the Europe-based Guinness Pro14 sides to compete in the Rainbow Cup.

There have been doubts over whether the new tournament will go ahead due to Covid, but organisers are hopeful. It is seen as a precursor to an expanded ‘Pro16’ competition for the 2021-22 season, with the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers involved rather than the Cheetahs and Kings – the two South African teams that originally made it the Pro14 back in 2017.
