New rules for eateries will cause mass closure

RESTAURANT owners believe new regulations meant to benefit workers will result in many eateries shutting down.

Thulas Nxesi, the Minister of Employment and Labour, recently announced the regulations, which are part of the collective agreement by the newly-formed Bargaining Council for Fast Food, Restaurant, Catering and Allied Trades.

They seek to ensure restaurant staff earn more, get an allowance to clean their uniforms and get a bonus in December. Owners and staff will also have to contribute towards a pension fund and a funeral fund.
