How to do open plan well

Long, long ago (as long ago as the 13th century, in fact) open plan ruled. From the hall houses of the Middle Ages to the peasants’ cottages of medieval times, households lived, cooked and slept in just one large room. Obviously things have come on an awful lot since entire families slept on hay mattresses next to the fire, but open plan is still popular for very good reasons.
