THE BIRMINGHAM SUPERPRIX PROJECT: KEEPING A SPECIAL RACE ALIVE

Andrew Smallman is a self-described “proud Brummie”. He’s also a fully-paid-up member of a motorsportpassionate family. So when it comes to the Birmingham Superprix, the glorious street race held in the UK’s second city between 1986 and 1990 for Formula 3000, the Formula 2 of its day, he might seem an obvious candidate to be a big fan.

But there was a snag. Smallman was mere months old when the final ever Superprix was held.

“My sisterAmy used to race stockcars in Birmingham,” Smallman tells Motorsport News, “and every time we’d go through the city centre to where she’d race, Birmingham Wheels, I’d always remember my dad telling me about this race that happened in the city.
