Miking up

Microphones probably generate more column inches than any other practical aspect of recording. Topics include mic positioning and orientation, mic types, brands and models, and of course ancillary gear such as classic mic preamps. Once you’ve considered those aspects you can move on to the specific techniques of famous engineers, who you’ll often find happily blogging about them.

This is all interesting stuff, but it’s always worth keeping things in perspective. Remember, your goal is to capture the voices and instruments you’re recording so that they sound the way you want them to.
