Ask Matt

@TVGMMattRoush

It was a treat for CBS to release the first season of Star Trek: Discovery on their regular network (probably a COVID-related decision). Do you think there is any chance those of us without CBS All Access will get to see Season 2? —Larry

On CBS, probably not. (The last time CBS tried this, with a summer run, that’s all they aired.) The  spinoffs, including and others in the pipeline, are crucial to the identity of ViacomCBS’s streaming platform, which later this year will be rebranded as Paramount+ to further distance it from the legacy linear network. You’re right that the first season of got this primetime exposure because of pandemic production delays, but for the company, it’s also an effective tool to lure consumers inside the streaming tent. If that’s not a possibility, your best bet for now to see more of will be the DVD route.
