Jaguar unleashes a sportscar revolution

The switch to 3.5-litre naturally aspirated engines for world sportscars was controversial, but helped create one of the most spectacular sportsracers of all time.

Ross Brawn applied a Formula 1-style approach to the design of the Tom Walkinshaw Racing Jaguar XJR-14, pushing the downforce envelope, and the car moved the goalposts by a margin rarely seen. Over the opening three rounds, the XJR-14s were two to four seconds per lap quicker than the opposition, which included the best of the older-generation turbocars: the Mercedes C11 (albeit saddled with extra weight).
