Player receives presidential award from Trump despite his apartheid role
A DAY after a mob of President Donald Trump supporters invaded the US Capitol building, it was ironic that Gary Player accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump in a closed-door ceremony on January 7.
Much like how Player’s support for the apartheid government that was kept from view of mainstream media or even erased from collective post-apartheid memory, his latest award being held behind closed doors reinforces the stain long associated with him. Befitting too that the award should come from a president who has been accused of being a white supremacist and who has made numerous racist statements.
