How often do you read about offroad vans being equipped with tow points on the rear of the chassis, implying that that is a significant feature for those with a yen to go offroading? And it is, if you’re likely to ever be in the position of becoming bogged in a difficult situation and having to disconnect and drag your van out with a tow from somewhere on solid ground.
But have you ever given a thought to the mechanics of that? You’re going to have to drop the jockey wheel and lift the hitch off the tow bar, drive the vehicle out (if possible) and then start hauling your van from either the front or the rear. But what do you reckon the chances are that you’ll still have a jockey wheel standing at the front after you’re finished? And then you’re going to have to work out how you get the tow hitch back up to tow bar height to hook it up to your tow vehicle again.
The point is that most jockey wheels simply wouldn’t stand up to that sort of abuse, even if lowered to reduce the leverage on the wheel, post and its mountings.
