Growing in the shadows

A sunny plot may seem like a dream come true when yours languishes in shade for all or part of the day But rejoice, as there are plenty of delicious fruit and vegetables that thrive in shade or partial shade and if you have places where the sun shines for just part of the day, the list is even longer. In fact some shade can be a great thing in summer, even for sun-loving crops, since too much sun can cause some to bolt (run to seed) prematurely and before they can be harvested, such as beetroot, coriander and lettuce.

WHAT IS SHADE?

It may seem like a strange question, but when it comes to your garden conditions can vary wildly. For example, deep shade under trees to shading for part of the day due to aspect or shadows cast by taller crops and surrounding plants.
