Mk2 LEAF SPRINGS

The multi-leafed, semi-elliptical springs on the rear of the Jaguar Mk2 are a well-proven and reliable suspension design. It may have originated on horse-drawn carts but it’s sufficiently sophisticated to provide a confident level of handling and a civilised ride quality. However, the springs themselves don’t last forever, with corrosion destroying a multitude of components and bushes often becoming worn. Fortunately, specialists such as SNG Barratt sell most of the parts required, including a selection of uprated components – and so we popped along to the company’s workshops at its Bridgnorth headquarters to witness the leaf spring replacement process.

Routine inspection of the rear leaf springs is essential to help spot when problems are emerging. A visual check for corrosion is worthwhile, especially between the leaves. Gentle leverage against the three mounting points and the respective shackles and bushes
