Gardening is an optimistic occupation, one that requires faith and a fundamental belief in Mother Nature. If we didn’t believe seeds would germinate, we wouldn’t sow them. If we thought our plants would not grow and burgeon, we wouldn’t dig the holes to plant them and we certainly wouldn’t have a go at growing anything new. When we garden, though we may be lost in the moment with the practicality of it, we are also anticipating the future.

After the year we’ve all just had, that anticipation is even more marked than ever. Looking forward to the challenge of growing new plants, and the treats in store if we grow them well, is relevant at the beginning of any year, but feels particularly so for 2021.
