The company based its UK growth on acquisition, achieved initially by obtaining the municipal services arm of Leigh Kleen Ltd from Leigh Environmental – Leigh Interests plc. in 1990. At the time of the acquisition, Leigh Kleen operated municipal waste collection contracts in: West Oxfordshire, Leominster and East Staffordshire. UK Waste bought the vehicle fleets operated on these contracts, some of which had transferred from the district and borough councils direct service organisations (DSO’S). These consisted of Shelvoke Dempster 4x2 16 tonne and 6x2 mid lift axle 23 tonne Routechiefs.
