‘The nation’s turbulence seemed to be embodied in the sickness of George III’
The 1811 census was conducted in a country undergoing ferocious change. Britain was still in the Napoleonic Wars, engaged in an ongoing war with Russia, and was about to embark on a war with the USA. The census showed that the number of men in the Army and Navy was greater than the population of Wales.
