Soon after the Volkswagen Golf MkV became available to the general public in 2004 I bumped into a motoring journalist friend who spent all his time on press trips, feasting on free lunches and writing road-test reports. He told me that of the hundreds of cars he’d driven, the one that stood head and shoulders above all else was the new Golf. Quite an endorsement–and if you get a good one, the prestige family hatch will feel just as convincing now as it did back then. No doubt, its grace, pace and refinement enhanced our motivation
