NATALIE MCGOLDRICK HAS just returned from an emergency call out. A yearling’s eyelid, that was a J- bloody mess on arrival — caught in the hook of a bucket handle and ripped open — was neatly sutured with blue thread and set on the road to recovery by the time she left.

Days for this equine vet, who also events and showjumps, are filled with temperature taking, leg feeling, injection giving, heart and colic monitoring, choke treating, castrations and, of course, wound suturing. It is one endless hamster wheel of work. As a frenetic one-woman veterinary practice, Natalie can never say ‘no’. Every telephone call receives a ‘yes’ and an ‘I’ll be there shortly’, whether it’s 4pm or 4am.
