Obesity increases risk of Covid-19 and other diseases
THE global pandemic has highlighted the dangers of conditions that are often overlooked and which now, more so than ever, put our health at risk.
The National Nutrition and Obesity Week, a movement comprising various organisations and the Department of Health, said recently it was time to shift to healthier eating as we braced ourselves for an extended period of uncertainty during the pandemic, and for the economic recession that was likely to deepen.
Professor Pamela Naidoo, chief executive of the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, said the country had one of the highest rates of overweight cases and obesity in the world. She said both were a contributor to cardiovascular disease, which was a comorbidity to Covid-19.
