‘I wanted to be a star’

THIS year marks 50 years since Kumari Ambigay, an Indian classical dance doyenne, opened her dance institute in Durban.

The now 73-year-old’s journey into Bharatha Natyam started at the age of 4 and it led to her opening the Kumari Ambigay Dance Institute in 1970.

Over the years, 118 students graduated and 15 qualified as teachers.

Ambigay said from an early age she featured in plays produced by her father, Mathiemugam Pillay, a playwright.

“My father kept culture burning,” said Ambigay, who is referred to as the “Mother of Indian culture”.
