    Overhearing my son Nathan talking on the phone, my heart swelled with pride.

    ‘I’ll be there soon, Don,’ he promised.

    My 21-year-old boy wasn’t chatting to a mate his own age, though – he was planning a catch up with his 81-year-old golf buddy.

    Running his own gardening business, Nathan had befriended many of his elderly clients.

    ‘Sometimes their lawns don’t really need doing – I think they just want a chat,’ Nathan told me.
