Q: If the minimum landing size for bass is 42cm, how come you can buy them in supermarkets sized 25cm either prepacked or fresh?

PF says: I get asked this question quite a lot and the reason is minimum landing sizes (MLS) are only applicable to all wild fish that are caught in the sea, either commercially or recreationally.

The bass you see on display on the fishmonger’s stand in supermarkets, which are often small, are farmed bass. These bass are farmed in Mediterranean countries such as Greece
