The geographical and climatic conditions in Malaysia are ideal for durian cultivation. The durian tree can grow extremely big even if it is randomly planted everywhere in the wild forests of Malaysia. However, it requires certain knowledge and skills for commercial production. “In particular, an improved irrigation system is closely linked to the success of commercial durian production,” said Hua Ziyao.
Hua Ziyao’s 9.75 acres orchard is located in Simpang Durian, Negeri Sembilan where Hua Ziyao’s ancestors were durian farmers. After inheriting the durian orchard from his father, he carefully studied it and learnt the techniques inherited by his ancestors. This eventually sparked interest in durian cultivation as he gained rich practical experience. From his previous experience, Hua Ziyao managed a durian orchard. “Many durian farmers have always given utmost importance to the management of fat culture. I too believe in the importance of fat culture. However, the success of fat culture highly depends on a perfect irrigation system to produce durians of good quality.” Hua Ziyao said. The drip irrigation system that he uses can properly control the amount of water and allow the water to gradually penetrate into the soil. The outlet is covered with a black plastic bucket to minimize moisture evaporation and retain moisture.
