IT’S BEEN MORE than 20 years since my last Wheels column. Those with long memories might recall it used to be right at the front of the book. It’s good to be back.

When I left Australia at the end of 1998 to embark on a journey that would eventually see me run leading automotive media brands in the Christmas party. Carburettors were a thing, 300kW got your attention, and in most cars traction control was something you did with your right foot. General Motors had been the world’s largest car maker for almost seven decades, Italy produced more cars and trucks than China, and Australia was one of the few countries in the world capable of designing, engineering and manufacturing its own vehicles.
