SOME YEARS AGO, I corresponded with a German jaeger (hunter) who was also a passionately keen gundog enthusiast.
His favoured breed was the Gordon setter and he even sent me a small book he had compiled about his best-ever Gordon, illustrated with photographs of the dog hunting and retrieving a variety of game, from hares to foxes.
He was mystified as to why we Brits were so keen on German pointers when we had our own pointers and setters. I explained that, traditionally, we don’t expect pointers and setters
