If you ask young boys and girls what they want to become one day, the list inevitably often includes a dream to work with animals and become a game ranger.
The romantic image of raising an orphaned antelope baby or walking and living amongst iconic game species in secluded wilderness areas attract many young boys and girls. Unfortunately, the real life of a game ranger is not a true reflection of this dream. Especially in 2020 the scourge of poaching and the decimation of Africa’s wildlife remain the main threat to the continent’s biodiversity.
The Section Ranger in the Kruger National Park (KNP) is supported by a team of field rangers, commonly known as game scouts. Traditionally these men were sourced from rural areas where they herded and protected their family’s cattle,
