Belgium suffered greater than any other nation during the First World War. For its size, the Belgian Army suffered as great, if not more, than other combatant nations. Between 1914 and 1918, more than 90 percent of Belgium lay under German occupation and more than 30,000 civilians died as the country refused to give up the struggle. Of the more than 270,000 men mobilized, more than 13,700 were killed and over 44,500 were wounded.
