Island rescue

It was the beginning of January. Bushfires were raging across South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, and at their wildlife park, Dana and Sam Mitchell were receiving a succession of badly burnt koalas.

“Their fur was singed and their feet were melting off. It was horrific! I couldn’t think how they were still alive …” Dana recalls.

As the fires worsened, Dana twice had to evacuate, packing injured koalas into her car – together with a few baby penguins, a wombat and her toddler son, Connor. The park survived, thanks to Sam and his team staying
