MERCURY may be the biggest, heaviest horse in the Household Cavalry barracks, but it’s his flowing locks that really catch the eye. A drum horse’s feathers have special significance – like the biblical Samson, Mercury’s hair is never cut.

“We don’t have permission to trim it,” explains Mercury’s groom and exercise rider, Trooper Austen Kime of the Household Cavalry’s Blues and Royals. “It has to be by order of The Queen, and she prefers the
