■ Work began on the underground railway loop in Liverpool that linked existing stations at Lime Street, Central and James Street with a new one at Moorfields, which replaced the former Exchange station. A short length of tunnel near James Street, bored in 1890 to link with the dock railway but later abandoned, was incorporated into the scheme. Merseyside
