WONDERFUL WENSLEYDALE

WE ARE VERY fond of the Yorkshire Dales. I have great memories of staying on a CL at Grinton, in Swaledale, as a boy in the 1970s, when we took our menagerie of dog, budgie, tortoise and hamster with us.

My wife Kay and I have enjoyed watching (numerous times!) the box set of TV series All Creatures Great and Small, featuring the adventures of country vet James Herriot, as well as reading the books.

I’ve lost count of the number of times there’s been something during an episode that’s reminded Kay of her childhood on the farm in the Derbyshire Peak District.

It also happens that my first piece for Practical Caravan, which I wrote in 2005, was about this area, so you’ll understand its attraction for us. Since then, we’ve been back many times.

A couple of years ago, Kay and I spent a lovely weekend at Skeldale House B&B (which provided the setting for the vets’ practice in the TV series), in Askrigg.

This included a journey on the heritage Wensleydale Railway from nearby Redmire to Bedale (stopping at all stations en route) for the Bedale Bonfire event. We enjoyed it so much, we vowed to
