In order to keep every soldier’s stomach full and ensure those at home didn’t go hungry during World War II, the British government introduced a system of rationing, overseen by the Ministry of Food.
The war was a major shock to Britain’s international food economy. Unlike other countries, Britain never faced the threat of famine. But the types of foods available for people to eat changed - more tinned meat, dried egg, dried milk, tinned and dried fruit, flour, less fresh meat, fresh fruit and veg and wheat, for example.
