Meanwhile, returning to our fire appliance, this came in quite a few forms and did eventually gain some degree of crew comfort by having a closed cab. The layout at the rear also changed. The open-cab WOT, classified as three-ton, was adapted by the RAF into the Fire Crash Tender, but today there are only three known surviving examples.
‘Wotty’ carries 400 gallons of water and 65 gallons of foam in its tanks, other versions have a 400-gallon water and Saponine compound combination tank or 300-gallon and 100-gallon foam compound in two individual tanks. The pump equipment is in a panelled box at the back of the vehicle over and behind the third axle, the small water tank sits amidships over the second axle.
