A Thoughtful Transition

Gardening can be an activity we enjoy throughout our lives—especially if we adapt our gardens to suit our changing abilities. Just ask Kathleen LaLiberte. She moved to Richmond, Vermont, in the 1970s with the dream of having a garden where she could grow her own food and flowers. And she has been living that dream for 35 years on a beautiful piece of land with sweeping views in the foothills of the Green Mountains.

Kathleen has every intention of aging right where she is, so she’s been adapting her garden to make it more manageable as she approaches retirement age. “I am very active and still maintain the gardens myself,” she says, “but now that I am over 60, I find it takes me longer to get things done and I am not as strong as I used to be. Tackling big jobs has become more daunting.”
