Dream of a European Super League inches closer

Progress towards a European Super League is the inevitable outcome of football’s pandemic panic. The earliest possible start date is 2027 (with 2030 more likely), and two powerful forces are in play: UEFA and FIFA.

UEFA is protective of the Champions League. Contracts with broadcasters and sponsors are renewed every three years. Heineken and MasterCard, for example, have just extended their sponsorships (euphemistically known as “partnerships” to pretend it’s not all about money).

Every three years, therefore, the clubs demand more money as their right for being the heart of the event. The next shake-up should occur with the 2024-27 cycle. Trouble is, they are split about what they want. The giants want
