Matt Blessing as the recipient of the fifty-fourth annual William Best Hesseltine Award for volume 103 of the His article, “‘Alaska, Ho!’: Arville Schaleben and the Matanuska Valley Colony,” appeared in the Winter 2019 issue and was voted best article of the volume reporter-in-the-field, the story of resettlement is replete with colorful characters, from the runaway daughter of the Bouwen clan, the largest family in the program, to the valley’s sharp-eyed newspaper editor. It even features an ill-fated appearance by Roy Rogers.
