“Yeah, sometimes things are too far gone and you might need a respray, but you’d be shocked at what can be saved these days,” says Wayne Brake, who owns and runs Tauranga-based grooming, detailing, and paint-restoration specialists Doctor Cuts Detail Shop. Wayne has been in the automotive game for a long time and has seen it all — good and bad. In this article, we talk to him about technology, technique, and knowing when to call in the professionals. “As paint technology changed, so has the grooming industry,” he says. “In the days of plastered-on 2K, there wasn’t a lot that could be done to the finish, apart from a deep wool cut. Now, automotive paint has had a lot of science go into it, and it’s changed how we maintain and shine the finish — in our shop we have eight different machines for polishing a vehicle and over 100 different pad-and-compound combinations designed to get the best result for each individual finish.”
