This season Olivia Colman returns as the Queen, who is growing older and watching her offspring settle into adulthood while political unrest and social change uproot the world around her. The actress, 46, insists that while Her Majesty is facing plenty of hardship at this stage of her life, she’s not emotionally detached. “I don’t think she’s cold-hearted,” says Olivia. “She’s been told she has to be the rock, the one everyone relies on. If she crumbles she’s not doing her job. I take offence at the idea that she’s cold-hearted. As her children have grown she’s starting to wonder what she’s been like as a mother and she’s thinking, ‘Did I do that right?’”
