THE FIELD FROM THE ARCHIVES

COLD, boisterous morning, with occasional heavy showers of rain and sleet, is hardly the weather one would select for partridge driving. However, we make a start, trusting the day will improve. Before we arrive at the end of our long drive along the muddy country lanes, with the hedgerows dank and dripping with moisture, the rain ceases; through the drifting clouds we see a patch of blue sky. Quickly getting gun-case and cartridge bag, and calling the retriever (snugly curled up somewhat loth to leave his comfortable quarters), we make our way to the breakfast room and gulp down a cup of coffee before starting.
