Tapling’s treasures

As revealed in the first part of this two-part guide to Thomas Tapling’s life and stamp collection, the MP, businessman and philatelist was an enthusiastic completist, determined to document every stamp issued during his lifetime. His collection embraces the first 50 years of postage stamp history, 1840 to 1890, and is the only collection from the 19th century which has been kept intact.

Now held at London’s British Library, his huge collection contains many unique and priceless items, including an unused vertical pair of the famous Basel Dove issues from 1845, a vast selection of Hawaii 1851-52 Missionary stamps, and the Cape of Good Hope 1861 4d printed in vermilion instead of blue, in a pair with
