Replacing steering knuckle ball joints

DIFFICULTY:
MODELS: Range Rover P38, Disco 2.
TOOLS: General workshop tools, including 12, 13, 15, 22 and 24 mm spanners and sockets, ball joint splitter, and a good quality ball joint removal tool and a torque wrench.
PARTS & COSTS: Upper ball joint steering knuckle, part number FTC3570, £8 to £41.50; lower ball joint steering knuckle, part number FTC3571, £6 to £32.50.
WORK SAFELY:
• Unless the work is being done on a suitable vehicle lift (which is the safer and easier option) support the vehicle securely on suitable axle stands and place secondary supports underneath. Ensure the vehicle cannot roll.
• Wear protective gloves or barrier cream to protect the skin from oils and sharp edges of components.
• If doing this work, adhere to the procedures set out in the Land Rover workshop manual, and the recommended tightening torques for the specific vehicle.
• Consult a garage if unsure of any work.
