TOWARDS THE END of his life, so goes a joke in the family of famed scientist Lester Grinspoon, you could drive the last couple of miles to his nursing home blindfolded, following the scent of cannabis.

Grinspoon devoted much of his life to fighting the stigma around the plant, and as his storied life neared its end, he relied heavily on cannabis to ease his pain. He even had a strain named after him.

Grinspoon died in June at the age of 92. He lived long enough to see cannabis evolve from a forbidden fruit to a medical alternative to a legal recreational substance in 11 states, advances that may not have happened and 1993’s .
