THE SHARECROPPER’S DAUGHTER

Rhymesayers artist Sa-Roc was on track to become a veterinarian—at least that’s what she thought. While studying biology at Howard University, the Washington, DC, native changed course and wound up pursuing a career in hip-hop—not exactly what her parents had in mind for her.

“I love animals,” Sa-Roc says. “We always had a bunch of them around the house, so I wanted to be a veterinarian and that evolved into studying zoology. Then my parents were like, ‘You should be a doctor,’ because I did really good in school. I was like, ‘Okay, well, let me do that.’ But then once I had the opportunity to work with cadavers, I realized that wasn’t going to happen.
