So intense

Almost twothirds of New Zealand’s grape harvest this year was of a single variety from a single region – Marlborough sauvignon blanc. “For overall fruit quality, this is one of the best vintages I’ve experienced,” says Ivan Sutherland, co-founder of Dog Point Vineyard.

Dryness was a crucial factor: from December 21 to April 18, Marlborough recorded less than a quarter of its normal rainfall. Hans Herzog, of Blenheim’s Hans Herzog Estate, says “the dryness made for small berries with less – but extremely concentrated – juice”.

The 2020 sauvignon blancs from other regions in the South Island and the Wairarapa also show impressive flavour depth, vigour and aromatic intensity. These 30 wines all stand
