Hilo Trollers August Tournament
The Hilo Trollers held their last tournament of the season on Sunday, August 16. The Trollers’ Board of Directors wisely decided to cancel the Labor Day Tournament, so this tournament became the last tournament of the 2020 season. The event also determined the year-end results. These will be presented in next month’s Hilo Seawatch.
The weather held on the 16th, and 14 boats were entered. Six landed qualifying flagfish, and two additional boats landed nice-sized aku. Two marlin, four ‘ahi, three ono and two qualifying mahimahi were landed. Four large aku (otaru), weighing between 23 and 24.5 pounds, were also landed along with some big pieces of ‘opala (ocean trash). Many fishermen consider large otaru to be the best sashimi fish!
The largest marlin and largest fish overall was by Capt. Darin Okino and crew. The largest ‘ahi was a 133.8-lb yellowfin landed on the by Capt. Rodney Nishiki and crew. The edged out the second marlin of the day by 1.1 ponds to take the honors for second largest fish overall.
