Rugelach share roots with some of these treats, but according to food writer Tami Ganeles Weiser, the magazine, “… the creation of rugelach, as we know them today—cookies made from yeast-free dough, rather than yeasted pastries—happened in the United States, less than a century ago, as a result of the commercialization of one of its key ingredients: cream cheese.”
