Ten years on, remains the game where you dread your character’s reaction to horror as much as the horror itself. Later on in the ten-to-15-hour story we seal ourselves in a storeroom to escape a creature of torquing shadow, its presence sending ripples through the air. We’ve lost our lantern and while our character, Paris-born engineer Tasi Trianon, has great night vision, she dreads the dark. As her panic mounts, our ears fill with hissing voices. The view pulsates, oily veins creeping in from the corners. Too much of this and Tasi will tumble into a nightmare of hurtling corridors only to surface elsewhere in the world, her flesh blackened and bulging. Then, in the nick of time, we see it: a matchbook, tucked under a shelf. Striking one buys Tasi a few seconds of calm – time enough for the entity outside to move away.
