Turning Spatulas and Spoons

I really enjoy turning useful items to give to friends and family. My practical gift options include bowls, platters, cups, scoops, boxes, canisters and treenware. The last group — treenware — includes rolling pins, spurtles (rods for stirring oatmeal), honey dippers, forks, spoons and spatulas. Among these, the basic turning process is identical for creating forks, spoons and spatulas; the only difference is how these items are completed once they’re off the lathe.
Spoons can be accomplished by turning in a second axis (which I covered in the August 2017 issue), but they’re more commonly carved. I demonstrated
