Rectal prolapse, sometimes called anal prolapse, means that a portion of the intestine (the rectum) protrudes through the anus. It needs to be treated very quickly, as the swelling cuts off the blood supply to the rectum and intestine, which may lead to tissues here dying off and becoming necrotic.
