Front lights for road riding
This time of year sees the seasons quickly transition and the balance of light in the northern hemisphere sway towards more hours of darkness. For the cyclist who wishes to continue to shoehorn in the hours of riding we’ve become accustomed to throughout the summer months, this will inevitably mean spending time riding in low light, or even in the dark. At this point our thoughts turn to lights and being able to shine a beacon through the dark in order to be able to see the road ahead.
Choosing the right light can be a fairly tricky task when it comes to road riding. In this respect, our off-road cousins have a much easier deal – simply get the most powerful lights you can afford, strap them onto your handlebar and helmet and voilà! Night turns into day. The right light for the road is a far more nuanced affair. While it would be simple to run the brightest light, ensuring maximum vision, the safety of other road users has to be taken into account. Much in the same way you can’t pootle along with your full beams blazing while driving your car, you can’t simply blast all the lumens onto the road.
