BACKGROUND TO… György Ligeti (1923–2006)

Born in Transylvania to a family of Hungarian Jews, Ligeti was, a solo cello piece for a fellow student he was secretly in love with. She never played it, but when in 1953 another cellist, Vera DĂŠnes, asked for a work, he added a second movement to create his Solo Cello Sonata.
